The Administration’s freeze on new foreign assistance funding, issuance of stop-work orders on existing programs, and the abrupt dismantling of USAID, has created significant unintended consequences for America’s national security and economic interests.

For less than 1% of the federal budget, U.S. foreign assistance yields significant benefits for recipients and the American people. Education programs alone allow children around the world to meet their potential and become thriving members of the global economy.

While it makes sense for any new Administration to review U.S. foreign policy and national security programs to ensure alignment with its agenda and priorities, the near total freeze and dismantling of USAID is already jeopardizing America’s safety, strength, and prosperity.

As a constituent, I am writing to express my deep concern over the freeze of U.S. foreign assistance, stop-work orders, and the dismantling of USAID, all of which will have long-lasting consequences for national security, strength, and prosperity. While any new administration has the right to review U.S. foreign policy and programming, the abrupt stop to foreign assistance programs is tarnishing our reputation abroad and leaving room for our adversaries, like China and Russia, to step into the void we leave. For less than 1% of the federal budget, U.S. foreign assistance protects global public health, stopping new threats like Ebola and polio from reaching American shores. It provides education programs for children around the world, allowing them to meet their potential and become thriving members of the global economy. I urge you to doing everything in your power to lift the stop work order and to resume U.S. foreign assistance efforts. We cannot wait – the impacts of pausing or ending these programs are immediate. For the 44 million children in education programs funded by the U.S. Government, the longer they are out of school, the less likely they are to return. U.S. foreign assistance isn’t only the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do for our national security and economic prosperity. Doubling the percentage of youth with secondary education cuts the risk of conflict in half. For every year of education, hourly wages increase by 9%. US foreign assistance counters China’s growing influence in low- and middle-income countries around the world, preserving American global leadership. Thank you for your consideration.
