Happy 4th of July

As we celebrate the birth of American independence today, I find myself reflecting on the meaning of freedom - not only the kind won through revolution and written into history books, but the personal freedoms we continue to fight for every day: the freedom to dream, to learn, and to shape one’s own future.

For me, this holiday is deeply personal. As the daughter of immigrants, I was raised by two people who arrived in this country with very little, but an unwavering belief in education as the pathway to a better life. They worked long hours, sacrificed comforts, and prioritized a quality education for me and my sister.

That belief became the compass that guided me through my own educational journey, and it continues to drive our work at GCE-US. Because for all of us here, education is not a privilege, it’s a promise. A promise that every child, regardless of where they come from or what language they speak at home, deserves the tools to realize their full potential.

This Independence Day let’s recommit ourselves to a vision of freedom that includes access to high-quality education for all. Let’s honor the sacrifices of generations past by building a future where every child can grow up free not only in name, but in opportunity.

Sincerely,

Giulia McPherson
Executive Director

The End of USAID

As of July 1, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) officially concluded its implementation of foreign assistance programs. An estimated 80 percent of USAID's programs have been cancelled, and the remaining programs will now be administered by the U.S. Department of State. At the same time, the State Department is undergoing a reorganization and facing staff layoffs as part of a reduction in force effort.

Today, only two known global education programs remain and the future of education as part of U.S. foreign assistance efforts is uncertain. GCE-US is actively engaging with Congress, the Administration, and the State Department to make the case for why education must remain a priority. On July 10, we will host a members-only briefing to discuss the integration of USAID programs into the State Department. Preparations Underway

At GCE-US, we’re excited about the incredible progress of our 2025 Youth Advocate program. Our advocates have been hard at work, learning how to use their voices to champion global education policies and drive meaningful change.

On July 15, they will gather in Washington, D.C. to meet with their policymakers and to discuss the importance of supporting foreign assistance for children, funding for international basic education, and how their representatives can join the bipartisan Basic Education Caucus. From engaging with policymakers to leading community initiatives, these young leaders embody the spirit of activism and the commitment to a more inclusive, equitable education landscape.

Keep an eye on GCE-US social media channels in the coming days for updates!

Member Spotlight: Kenya Education Fund

For over 18 years, the Kenya Education Fund (KEF) has been transforming lives by providing high school scholarships to students from under-resourced communities across Kenya. By covering school fees and essential items like uniforms, books, and sanitary products, KEF removes financial barriers that keep many promising students from completing their education.

KEF’s work goes beyond tuition support. Through life skills workshops, career mentorship, and college preparation programs, KEF empowers students to break the cycle of poverty and create lasting change in their communities. To date, KEF has supported over 4,600 students - many of whom are now self-sufficient members of society. Every scholarship tells a story of hope, resilience, and opportunity. KEF remains committed to ensuring access to education.
