Marching On

Over the past month, the Administration has continued to take actions that have effectively dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development and placed into serious doubt whether the U.S. will continue to provide foreign assistance, including support for international basic education programs.

GCE-US continues to stand firm as we called on the Administration to restore thousands of international assistance programs that were terminated, mobilized over 130 advocates who sent almost 300 emails to their policymakers, and hosted two members-only meetings for the GCE-US coalition to share the latest updates and advocacy opportunities. We also continue to blanket Capitol Hill with details regarding the impact of these program terminations and successfully raised the issue of global education during a Congressional hearing.

As we enter March and celebrate International Women’s Day tomorrow – March 8 – we will continue to highlight those who are positively impacted by investments in global education programs, including women and girls. Our work will not stop as we advocate for those left behind.

In solidarity,

Giulia McPherson
Executive Director

International Basic Education Caucus Renewed

With the start of the 119th Congress, the International Basic Education Caucus has been renewed in the House of Representatives. Entering its 10th year, this bipartisan group of policymakers supports efforts to strengthen U.S. engagement in basic education around the world. Led by Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-1) and Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL-5) the caucus has been instrumental in leading initiatives that spotlight the importance of U.S. investments in international basic education programs. GCE-US is working closely with the caucus as it actively seeks out new members and develops its annual Dear Colleague letter, supporting at least $970 million in the Basic Education account, including funding for the Global Partnership for Education and Education Cannot Wait.

GCE-US Youth Engagement Committee Launches

We're excited to announce our new Youth Engagement Committee, which will bring GCE-US members and passionate youth advocates together to advocate for a whole-child approach to U.S. foreign assistance and quality education worldwide. The committee will provide advocacy training to youth participants in preparation for a youth advocacy day in Washington D.C. meeting with key stakeholders on Capitol Hill.

New GCE-US Senior Fellow, Grace Mariana Rector, will lead the committee bringing seven years of experience in international education, teaching, and advocacy. A special thanks to GCE-US members Girls Learn and She's the First for their leadership as founding organizational members of this important initiative that will connect passionate youth advocates with opportunities to influence education policy.
